Eggs for Easter

When it comes to Easter, I always remember my childhood time. A busy house with 4 siblings and my parents. It was exciting times. We would wake up very early to check what kind of egg we would get and I can tell we never ended disappointed. The eggs were huge, unbelievable! Unless my idea of real sizes weren’t very good at a time. Sometimes there was a gigantic one with a good sized ones inside. And the ones inside weren’t empty either – lots of mini eggs or bonbons inside them.

Years past by and it was my turn to bring excitement to my child. I could never find the types of eggs I used to have as kids. However, the main attraction was the famous egg hunts at home, very early in the morning. The house would be all decorated and the small eggs would be spread about very well hidden. After that the big surprise would come. An egg in form of a bunny or alike. Nothing better to see the smile from one side to another in a child’s face, and maybe the idea of eggs and bunnies could be a manner of creating good memories of happiness in our souls during Easter.

Nowadays there is excitement in this house but not as it used to be, as there is no children anymore. But at least we all still have our childish side and we always look forward for an egg. No matter the size, no matter its colours…eggs for easter are always welcome!

I still don’t know even if I will get one this year, so for me to be in a safe side, I decided to illustrate some, so I can still have a smile in face 🙂 .

Illustrating the eggs for Easter

When I decided to do an illustration of eggs, I wanted them to look practically real and have the feeling of a 3D real world. I used Affinity Designer after a while and I was happy how I could still manage it well.

I started with a circle shape, transformed it into curves and made it like an egg. Fill it in with colour and used linear gradient. For the highlights I used circle shapes again and different types of gradient, linear or radial. For the shadows I used inner glow and gaussian blur. The eggs were duplicated and a black and white gradient were applied to them, to help further to achieve a dimensional feeling.

The same principle followed for the drawings on the eggs. The bunny one was a result of several shapes put together, using the shape builder. Each of the drawings was added as symbols, so they could be used in a latter time, and also to create patterns.

The reflection was just a matter of inverting the layer where the eggs were, applying transparency and a bit of blur.

My next aim is to learn how I can create a good recording of my process, add it to my YouTube channel that is empty at the moment, and you all could follow if you wanted 🙂 .
